Recording Calls on a Smartphone? There's an App for That.

February 06, 2013

We all know of police surveillance equipment recording phone calls, but recording calls on your smartphone? How cool is that?

But with free apps on any smartphone app store today, it’s almost expected. As with everything else these days, with every request for another daily chore made easier, “there is an app for that.” If you own a smartphone, you’re in luck, because when it comes to recording calls, there’s more than one app for that.

Let it be known, though, that different states have different rules when it comes to recording phone conversations. It’s always wise to let all parties involved know in advance that the call is being recorded.

That said, let’s dive into some of the options available, both on iOS and Android, that allow you to get your Watergate on…

TeleStar’s Call Recorder | IntCall is one of the apps you can find on both the Android and iOS platforms. The program only works on outbound calls, which means you can only record the calls you make. Calls are saved in the cloud with an e-mail link to the MP3 file sent when you hang up. There is, however, a downside: calls are charged at 10 cents per minute within the States. A cheaper alternative to this app would be’s Call Recorder Pro for iOS, which works on both inbound and outbound calls and cost only 99 cents per recording.

For Android users, there is Clever Mobile’s Call Recorder, a free app for recording inbound and outbound calls.

Google Voice | This is an excellent alternative to using apps when you need to record inbound calls. Regardless of the make of your phone, Google Voice records any call routed through your Google Voice number by simply pressing four to either start or stop recording. To download, share or replay the call, log in to your Google Voice account.

So the next time you need to record an interview or a podcast through your phone, know that there are apps for that and they are only one click away.
