Survey Finds Organizations Not GDPR Compliance Ready

November 10, 2017

HyTrust, Inc. announced findings from its latest cloud adoption survey, which was conducted at VMWorld 2017. The survey evaluated the deployment choices of 323 respondents for cloud infrastructure, containers, workload security, risk, and compliance. This biggest discovery was the vast amount of corporations which aren’t ready for General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance, starting May 2018.

The European Union (EU) data privacy act applies to organizations within and outside the EU. It affects outside organizations when processing and holding European Union resident’s private data.

Here are the main discoveries from the GDPR:

  • 21 percent of companies have concerns over GDPR with a plan ready
  • 52 percent of respondents admit their company is not worried or oblivious to the relevance of the GDRP’s affects on business
  • 27 percent of respondents are worried about GDPR but lack a plan

Failure to comply with the GDPR can lead to fines of around four percent of annual revenue yet so many businesses remain ill-prepared. It is estimated by Gartner that less than half of all affected business will meet full GDPR compliance by May 25, 2018.

"If you think GDPR doesn't apply to your organization, think again," said Eric Chiu, founder and president, HyTrust. "The survey results were surprising, many organizations are unprepared or have not perhaps taken the time to assess the impact GDPR requirements may place on their cloud infrastructure. Most organizations today are very aware of their security risks but are not as far along with technology and processes to meet the GDPR compliance requirements, despite a May 2018 deadline that has significant fines for failure to comply."

Those who participated in the survey were from the government/military, financial/ insurance, healthcare/biotech, manufacturing, transportation/shipping and technology.
